STEP 1: Appointment with the Division Recruiter
Make an appointment with the Division Recruiter @ 727-1223 for an informal interview.
STEP 2: Complete Application Paperwork
Fill out forms completely. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. All applications must be
returned to the Recruiter.
STEP 3: Obtain 5 Year Driving Record
You are responsible for obtaining your driving record. Take the enclosed DMV record request and tell
the DMV you are a volunteer firefighter / rescue squad applicant. They will provide you with a record
free of charge. All volunteer personnel must have a valid Virginia Driver's License. Please be sure that
all driving records are originals. Records must be current within 30 days of the application date. Please
note that Reckless Driving and DUI and DUI Convictions within the past 5 years are not acceptable and will
result in the rejection of the application. Also, if the points on your driving record are worse than -2,
your application will not be accepted.
STEP 4: Provide Copies of Current Certifications
Trained applicants must provide copies of all current certifications (CPR, EMT, Paramedic, Fire Training, Etc.).
Applicants with out-of-state certifications must provide in addition to copies of their current certifications,
a syllabus of the classes taken in order for the training center staff to evaluate them. The dates of the training
classes and the number of hours must meet or exceed Virginia Fire Service Standards. Individuals who have current
National Registry or another EMT state certification will need to apply for Virginia reciprocity. They may do so
by contacting the Fire Division Medical Operations Office located on the first floor below the
fire training center at 1300 Thomas Street, 727-1202, or by contacting the Office of Emergency Medical Services at the address below.

STEP 5: Notification & Training
All training is provided to support our volunteer program.
Classes are not open to the general public.
Approved applicants will be notified and given the dates of the mandatory Prerequisite
Classes for EMT-B and Firefighter 1&2 Classes. Training applicants will have to take some of all of
the Prerequisite Classes.
STEP 6: Completion of Required Certifications
Upon completion of both the mandatory prerequisite classes and either Firefighter 1&2, or EMT-B Classes,
an individual's application will be sent to the fire company or rescue squad of their choice. The applicant
will be notified by one of the fire company or rescue squad officers for an interview or orientation before
being voted on by the membership.
STEP 7: Assignment to Company or Squad
The fire training center will issue a letter to the recruiting officer, company officers, battalion chiefs,
and the Division Warehouse of applicants who have completed all Division requirements and can be assigned to
a company or squad of their choice.
