- Commanded the 4200 employees of the Naval Aviation Depot North Island in San Diego during a period of organizational turbulence resulting from the end of the Cold War. The depot was recognized as a principle contributor to the Naval Air Systems Command being awarded the Presidential Quality Award for 1993. Also, the depot itself was recognized through the award of the USA Today Quality Cup for 1993.
- 1965 - 1989
Held a variety of operational and staff positions:
- From 1977 to 1981, program manager for the Navy's A-4 Skyhawk aircraft acquisition program.
- Two tours of duty in Vietnam. The first was based ashore in Vung Tau and Binh Thuy, Republic of Vietnam (1969 - 1970) flying the OV-10 Bronco conducting close air support for Navy Riverine Forces and SEAL operations. During 1972 - 1973 conducted strike operations into North Vietnam flying the A-7E Corsair II from USS America.
- In all, a total of over 350 combat missions were flown. Combat awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross, five individual action Air Medals and five Navy Commendation Medals.
